Guide to Your Digital Library

Posted on:

Libby, hoopla, Boundless... We offer cardholders lots of great ways to use the Library, but it can be hard to keep them all straight! Here's your handy guide to sorting out which one is best for you.

Search, Place Holds, and Manage Your Account:

HPL Mobile App: Our entire library catalog, but in app form! While you can't use this app to read eBooks, you can search the catalog, place holds on physical or digital items, and manage your library account. You can download it on both iOS and Android phones.

The app even stores a digital version of your library card for easy check-out!

Reading, Listening, and Streaming:

  • Libby: Our leading app for reading eBooks and listening to audiobooks. Libby lets you place holds on the most popular titles so you can read (or listen) to them on your device. You can borrow up to 10 digital items at a time using Libby and have 10 holds at a time. You can even check out digital magazines on Libby!
  • Hoopla: Hoopla isn't just for eBooks and audiobooks - they also offer comics, music albums, TV shows, and movies. Unlike Libby, there are no holds and no waiting on hoopla digital! Instantly borrow up to 10 items per month.
  • Boundless: Can't find it on Libby or hoopla? Try Boundless' collection of popular eBooks and audiobooks. They also have an extensive library of independently published eBooks that can be borrowed instantly with no waiting! Borrow up to 5 items at a time and have 5 holds at a time.

Newspapers & Magazines:

Helen Plum cardholders also get access to the following newspapers and digital newsstands online:

  • The New York Times: Get a free 7-day pass (as many times as you want!) to not only The New York Times but also The Athletic and New York Times Cooking!
  • The Wall Street Journal: Get a free 3-day pass (as many times as you want!)
  • The Washington Post: Get a free 7-day pass (as many times as you want!)
  • The Chicago Tribune: Search for current or historical articles via the ProQuest database (pro tip: the full-color online Trib is also available on PressReader!)
  • PressReader: An all-you-can-read digital newsstand with thousands of the world’s most popular newspapers and magazines. From USA Today and The Guardian to PC World and Modern Cat, stay up to date on your favorite issues.
